Brave 8-Year-Old Steps In To Save Baby Brother From Kidnapper

We like to imagine our children will be safe when they’re out playing, especially when they’re with their siblings. However, there are bad people in the world and that’s not always the case. Thankfully, 8-year-old Delicia Wright didn’t pause before taking action when a man grabbed her 22-month-old brother and tried to kidnap him from the park where they were playing.

  1. The three Wright siblings were having fun near their babysitter’s house. There was 10-year-old Brenden, 8-year-old Delicia, and 22-month-old Owen, and there should have been safety in numbers.
  2. They didn’t realize they were being watched by an evil man. Before they knew what to do, the man came over and picked Owen up and began running away with him as the boy screamed.
  3. Delicia wasn’t about to let the man get away with her little brother. She began running after the man, and Brenden followed close behind with the stroller. There was no way the man was getting away that easily.
  4. The commotion caught the attention of some older teens. Because Owen was screaming so loud and his siblings were also shouting, the teens realized something was seriously awry. “It really turned into blood-curdling screaming,” one of them told Inside Edition. Another recalled, “When you kind of pick up there’s a girl running behind him, he’s running down an alleyway with a kid – things don’t look right.”
  5. One of the teenagers called 911. Police were alerted, and surveillance cameras at one of the grocery stores nearby also caught the incident clearly. At one point, you could the suspect walking by with Owen in his arms.
  6. The kidnapper eventually realized he wasn’t getting away with Owen. Thanks to Delicia’s loud screaming and the attention she drew, the kidnapper put Owen down and left him in an empty parking lot before running away.
  7. Personal safety expert Kathleen Baty believes Delicia (and Brenden) saved Owen. “Using your voice. Using your words. Screaming, yelling, ‘Help!’ ‘Stranger danger!’ ‘This is not my father!’ Can be the real difference between life and death. Instilling your kids that when they are out in public that if some adult comes up to them they need to have that gut reaction and go the other way and yell and scream as loud as they can,” she said.
  8. Thankfully, Owen escaped unharmed. It’s unclear if the kidnapper was ever caught, but the most important thing is that the Wright kids are safe and sound!
