Nearly Half Of Men Think They Could Safely Land A Passenger Plane In An Emergency

Guys, I love you, but some of you are downright delusional. In many ways, this likely works to men’s advantage — they still run the world because they have an inflated sense of importance and confidence, and faking it ’til you make it goes a long way.

However, a YouGov survey has shown just how deranged a good portion of the male population really is, since nearly half of them literally think they could safely land a passenger plane in an emergency if they had to.

Apparently, a lot of men think they have innate piloting skills.

YouGov asked respondents a simple question: “How confident are you that you could safely land a passenger airplane in an emergency situation, relying only on the assistance of air traffic control?”

A whopping 20% of men said they were “very confident”” they could do it, with a further 26% saying they felt “somewhat confident” they could get the plane down safely.

Plus, 18% said that while they were “not very confident,” they’d still give it a go. Thankfully, 28% admitted they were not at all confident they could do it.

Women fared slightly better here.

Likely realizing that, you know, flying an airplane and everything it entails takes many years of specialist training and experience, only 7% of female respondents said they were “very confident” they could land the aircraft, with 13% saying they were “somewhat confident.”

The majority of women — 55% to be specific — admitted they were “not at all confident” and would have zero clue on how to get everyone back on the ground in one piece.

Landing an airplane is really hard, people.

It’s even harder than getting the plane off the ground in the first place. Not only do you have to pay attention to the direction of the gigantic steel bird you’re in control of, but you also have to control the descent rate and speed, make sure the plane’s gear is set up for optimal descent, stay in touch with air traffic control… the list goes on and on.

In other words, this isn’t something a novice who’s watched a few Tom Cruise movies is going to be able to do. Hilarious that so many think so, though!
