No One Wants To Be Around Someone Who Does These 15 Things

It’s not hard to be someone who’s pleasant to be around. All you need to do is be considerate, respectful, and nice to the people you meet. Unfortunately, not everyone is like that, and in fact, they’re not fun to be around because they do these things. Stay away from them at all costs!

1. They bring you down.

While they might be subtle about it, this person always tries to put you down in any way they can. Oftentimes, this results in them giving you backhanded compliments or making subtle digs that they try to pass off as harmless “jokes.” They want to destroy your self-esteem, and if you let them, they’ll do it little by little.

2. They talk over you.

The loudest, most arrogant person in the room usually isn’t all that fun to be around. They talk over you because they want to dominate everything even if they have nothing to say. It’s like they’re talking to themselves instead of anyone else. They refuse to let anyone else have the spotlight — they want to hog it for themselves. This type of conversational narcissism is unpleasant at best and downright damaging at worst, CNBC explains.

3. They make you feel used.

Unpleasant people sometimes have a hidden agenda, which means you might notice signs that they’re using you. For instance, maybe they’re always creeping out of the woodwork when they need money or advice, but then they disappear when they get what they want. They might be great otherwise (or so it seems), it’s just this behavior that makes you feel bad.

4. They look at you like you’re an alien.

You know when you’re talking to someone and they keep looking at you as though they think you’re foolish or ridiculous? That’s what unpleasant people do. Instead of telling you what they really think of you or voicing their true feelings, they’ll give you weird body language cues so they don’t have to say anything mean. However, it’s clear they’re thinking it!

5. They don’t have a concept of personal space.

You step away and the person steps closer, or they keep touching your arm during conversation. These are examples of personal space violations, and they can make you feel claustrophobic or like they’re trying to dominate you. Chances are,  you always wish you could communicate from behind a wall when you’re around them!

6. They don’t think about your boundaries.

When they suggest going hiking together or coming to your place for late-night drinks and you say “no,” they might roll their eyes and call you boring. This is their way of wanting to dominate and focus on themselves. Just keep turning them down — and not giving in when they try to convince you otherwise — and they should eventually get the hint.

7. They love negative gossip.

They always have the latest gossip to share, but it’s always negative gossip about other people. They might say it’s no big deal because it’s just harmless chit-chat, but they thrive on it — and they never seem to consider the feelings of the person they’re talking about. You can see how their eyes light up when they’re telling you about someone’s dirty secret. Be careful with your secrets around them.

8. They tell you little lies.

When someone feeds you with BS all the time, be on your guard because those little white lies are going to become larger ones. What starts as a small fib about not going to a party because they had other commitments when really, they just didn’t feel like going can quickly escalate into dishonesty about major issues. Soon enough, it becomes all but impossible to trust anything that comes out of their mouth.

9. They’re all about themselves.

Whenever you spend time with this person, they tend to be a tad self-obsessed. They want to talk about themselves and their life, and they look bored when the spotlight’s not on them. It can be draining!

10. They’re always defensive.

If the unpleasant person you’re dealing with is hypersensitive and always on guard, they might get angry when you confront them about something or when you question their choices. They get so defensive because they’re insecure or they’re trying to distract you from their feelings of anxiety or shame. Either way, being around them is an anxiety-inducing and difficult experience you’re not all that keen on, and rightfully so.

11. They blame you for little things.

No matter what happens, it’s always your fault. When this starts happening, it’s a red flag. If you don’t confront them about it, they’ll bring you down in the future with their lack of accountability. Over time, it’ll just get worse and erode your self-esteem.

12. They have passive-aggressive tendencies.

It’s draining to deal with people who are passive-aggressive because you can never be 100% sure of where you stand with them. As WebMD explains, these people love to make indirect digs or references to their true feelings without ever actually expressing them, leaving you guessing and often walking on eggshells. No thanks!

13. They’re quick to lose their temper.

Not only is a bad temper a sign of an impatient person, but it’s unpleasant because it keeps everyone on edge. Maybe they blow up about silly things and their moods are unpredictable. You might even feel nervous to talk to them about heavy topics in case they “lose it.” No one wants to live like that!

14. They use your insecurities against you.

They know your soft spots, and they’re not afraid to use them to their own advantage when it’s convenient for them. They probably do it in a “joking” way or claim that they just want to help, but make no mistake — unpleasant people are definitely doing this on purpose.

15. They want to laugh all the time.

Everyone loves to laugh and have a good time, but there’s a time and a space for levity and other occasions when you need to be serious. If you’re trying to talk about a serious problem you’re having and they want to crack jokes, they’re obviously not showing you respect and you’re better off not even being around them.
