15 Things Annoying People Do That Make Everyone Hate Them

We’ve all done annoying things in our lives. That’s just a part of being human. But there are certain things that (you might not be aware of) that are a surefire way to be hated by the people around you. Read on so that doesn’t happen to you.

1. Chew with their mouth open

Maybe we’re alone here, but people who chew with their mouths open are the worst. Not only is it annoying (the noise, the smacking) but it’s also gross (we don’t need to explain, do we?). The only food we want to see is the food on our plates and we will die on this hill.

2. Interrupt conversations

The absolute audacity! We don’t care if the conversation is about nothing, this is just straight-up disrespectful. If we wanted you to join the conversation, we would’ve asked. Wait your turn, please.

3. Talking loudly in quiet places

We’re just in the doctor’s office waiting for our appointment, why are you yelling? And why is your phone on speaker? We don’t need to hear the drama from your end or theirs. Ever heard of a thing called stepping outside?

4. Asking to split the bill when they got something more expensive than you did

Maybe we just don’t like wasting money, but we find this incredibly annoying. We got a Caesar salad, you got the lobster and a drink and you want to split it? Get real.

5. People who don’t clean up after themselves

When someone leaves trash for other people to pick up, it’s not only annoying but it’s extremely entitled. Who raised them? We’d certainly like to know.

6. Being a slow walker in high-traffic areas

This might be the most annoying tendency of all. Not only because it, well, slows everyone else down but it signals a ginormous lack of self-awareness. It’s not that hard to pull over to the side if you’re trying to figure out where to go. Other people have people to see and places to be!

7. Always trying to one-up everyone

Enthusiastic young indian employee sharing new project ideas with serious female boss. Diverse business woman team discussing working moments at office. HR manager listening to interns experience

If you meet a celebrity, they’ve met a more famous celebrity. If you say you have the best chocolate chip cookie recipe, they have a better one. Some people just don’t realize that not everything is a competition and it’s extremely—say it with us—ANNOYING.

8. Not muting their background noise on Zoom

Entrepreneur working on laptop with headache, anxiety and stress while thinking, idea and burnout in a cafe. Mental health and frustrated employee with audit, tax and work mistake in a coffee shop

This gets a bit into the lack of self-awareness thing again. If you were in the office, you wouldn’t be sitting in a meeting watching TikToks with your phone on full blast, right? So why is it any different over Zoom? It’s disruptive and we are over it.

9. Not letting people off a bus, subway, or elevator before you get on

subway

Sometimes people are in such a rush that they don’t realize how their behavior is impacting other people. Here’s the thing: Everyone is in a rush! Your time is not more important than anyone else’s. Letting people get off before you get on is a common courtesy that we as humans just have to follow—it’s the polite and respectful thing to do.

10. Close talking

You know those people who stand just a little too close when they talk to you? We do too, and we’re not big fans. Here’s why: everyone is entitled to have their own space and no one should be entitled to enter it (without permission). So if we can smell what you had for lunch when you’re telling us about your weekend, you need to take like 10 giant steps back.

11. Double-dipping

Not only is this annoying but it’s extremely unsanitary! Have we not learned anything from the Covid of it all? If you’re not our family or partner, we don’t want to eat the guacamole after you’ve double-dipped. You’re ruining the experience for everyone and we’re hungry.

12. Not picking up their dog’s crap

This one is pretty mind-boggling. It’s almost hard to write about because it seems so obvious that when your dog does their business, you pick it up. They certainly can’t take care of it themselves, so the onus is on the owner. We understand that sometimes you forget bags, but at least come back for it, okay?

13. Not replacing toilet paper

We’d like to think that the people who do this have never been stuck in a bathroom sans TP. Because if they had, there’s no way they would do this to another person. It’s just plain mean.

14. Not covering their mouth when they cough

Again, have we learned nothing from Covid? The germs, the sound effects, the horror! We don’t want to be around someone who’s sniffling, let alone coughing in our places. Stay home or cover your mouth.

15. Being a know-it-all

Here’s the thing: no one knows everything, and to pretend like you do is annoying. It’s okay to say “I don’t know” and to genuinely not know, life is all about learning, right?
