Are You Trusting These Types Of People? Here’s Why You Shouldn’t!

The ability to trust is invaluable in every type of relationship in life. You need to be able to trust your colleagues to carry the workload with you, your partner not to cheat on you, your friends not to desert you once they get married or have kids, and the list goes on and on. Being able to rely on people to have your best interest at heart is a good thing, but if you’re trusting the types of people listed below, it could all end up blowing up in your face.

1. The Over-Promiser Who Rarely Delivers

This person is quick to make grand promises and commitments, yet consistently fails to follow through. Their actions don’t match their words, which always leads to disappointment and broken trust. Relying on someone who can’t deliver can set you up for repeated letdowns. Do you really want to live like that?

2. The Gossip Who Knows Everyone’s Business

They seem to have the inside scoop on everyone and are all too eager to share it. If they’re willing to divulge other people’s secrets to you, chances are they won’t hesitate to share yours with someone else. Trusting a gossip with personal information is like broadcasting it to your entire network.

3. The Fair-Weather Friend Who’s Only There in Good Times

This person is all smiles and support when things are going well, but they vanish at the first sign of trouble. Their conditional loyalty shows they’re more interested in what you can offer than in a genuine relationship. Relying on them for support during difficult times can leave you feeling alone and unsupported.

4. The Manipulator Who Always Has an Angle

They’re charming and persuasive, which makes you feel special and understood, but their kindness often comes with strings attached. Manipulators have a knack for using other people for their own gain, making it risky to trust their motives or depend on them for genuine support.

5. The Perpetual Victim Who Never Takes Responsibility

This person perpetually blames everyone else for the bad things that happen in their life, refusing to acknowledge their role in their own problems. Trusting someone who can’t take responsibility can lead to a relationship where accountability is one-sided, and you might end up bearing the burden for issues that aren’t yours to fix.

6. The Jealous Type Who Resents Your Success

While they might try to look supportive, their underlying jealousy can lead to undermining behaviors and comments that chip away at your achievements and confidence. Trusting someone who secretly resents your success can sabotage your progress and self-esteem. This subtle undermining can make it hard to celebrate your victories and creates a competitive rather than supportive dynamic.

7. The Flaky Acquaintance Who Can’t Commit

They’re always enthusiastic about making plans or promises, but their follow-through is lacking. Trusting someone who can’t commit can lead to frustration and a sense of unreliability, making it difficult to count on them when it really matters. It disrupts your plans and causes unnecessary stress, especially in situations where you need their support or presence.

8. The Critic Who Finds Fault in Everything You Do

Their constant criticism, often masked as “tough love” or “just being honest,” can undermine your confidence and achievements. While constructive criticism can be a good thing, being constantly picked apart by someone can erode your trust in your own abilities and decisions.

9. The Secretive One Who Hides Their True Self

annoyed guy talking on phone

This person is a mystery, and they reveal very little about their thoughts, feelings, or personal life. Trusting someone who remains closed off can be challenging, especially since true trust is built on openness and vulnerability. The lack of transparency can lead to misunderstandings and a shallow relationship, where genuine connection and empathy are hard to achieve.

10. The Competitor Who Sees Everything as a Contest

Pensive lost in thoughts suffering from depression

Their need to be the best can turn even the simplest interaction into a competition. Trusting them can strain your relationship because genuine support and happiness for each other’s successes are overshadowed by some kind of weird rivalry you never signed up for. This competitive nature can stifle the sense of teamwork and partnership that’s essential for a healthy relationship.

11. The Controller Who Wants to Dictate Your Choices

They often try to steer your decisions and life according to their views, and they show very little regard for your autonomy. Trusting someone who tries to control everything you do is a way of stifling your independence. Over time, this dynamic can become suffocating, especially since you find your choices and desires consistently being overridden by their need to be in charge.

12. The Sycophant Who Agrees with Everything You Say

While their constant agreement might feel great at first, their lack of genuine opinion or constructive feedback can be a red flag. Trusting a yes-person can deprive you of the growth that comes from challenging conversations and different perspectives. It’s just not authentic, and that means ou can never trust their opinions are advice since it’s unclear whether they’re guided by honesty or a desire to please.

13. The Opportunist Who’s Friendly When It Suits Them

This person shows interest and warmth when they need something from you, but otherwise, they’re distant or disengaged. Their conditional engagement can make you feel valued only for what you can provide, rather than who you are. Trusting an opportunist means you end up in a transactional relationship where genuine affection and support are replaced by self-serving motives. You end up feeling used, and it sucks.

14. The Passive-Aggressive Communicator Who Hides Their True Feelings

They express dissatisfaction or disagreement through passive-aggressive behavior and comments rather than open and honest communication. This creates a confusing and tense environment, as you’re left to decipher their true intentions and feelings. Trusting someone who doesn’t know how to communicate clearly (or is unwilling to!) can lead to misunderstandings and unresolved conflicts since problems are never addressed head-on. That’s not a recipe for a healthy relationship.

15. The Eternal Pessimist Who Sees Only the Negative

This person has a knack for spotting the downside in every situation, and they oven give voice to doubts and concerns that can dampen your enthusiasm and optimism. Their constant negativity makes it difficult to share your hopes and plans, as they’re likely to focus on what could go wrong rather than the potential for success. Trusting a perennial pessimist can color your worldview with unnecessary gloom. It’s a misery, and you don’t need that.
