What Does It Mean When A Guy Kisses You On A First Date?

There are novels dedicated to trying to understand the mind of men, and we still don’t have the answers. Even if you’re the best at reading people and generally pick up on body language pretty well, there are still some things they do that we just can’t figure out. So what does it mean when a guy kisses you on the first date?

  1. He knows what he wants. We’re not in the business of wasting our time on Earth. In the year 2022, we get what we want. I can appreciate that because it takes so long to understand our attraction that sometimes we never get to act on our impulses. I applaud it when men take agency over the situation and kiss on first dates.
  2. It confirms he’s attracted to you. Maybe this was something that could have been inferred, but it’s a clear green light when you’ve met him in person for your date and he’s still interested. These physical affirmations aren’t up for debate. When a guy kisses you on a first date, it means he likes what he sees.
  3. He doesn’t want to waste time. This is a step beyond just being interested. When a guy kisses you on the first date, he probably wants to sleep with you and get straight down to business. Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it — you were probably on the date for that very same reason. Fair enough — you’re a catch.
  4. He’s been watching your body language. Obviously, consent is really important, but if your guy has been reading your body language right and gauging the vibe, that’s the information he’s going off when he leans in for that kiss. It’s also super sexy and intentional when a guy asks you if he can kiss you. It shows that he’s willing to be shot down and give you control, rather than swooping in hoping you’ll be surprised into kissing him.
  5. He wants to get to know you more. Sometimes on first dates, both people get a little nervous. The thing is it stops you from getting to know each other more intimately and organically because you’re getting in each other’s head about the “game” aspect of dating. Getting that first kiss over with demystifies that initial process and lowers the pressure. You can just be yourself.
  6. It shows he really listens to you. Most of the time on first dates, guys are too busy thinking about how to style their hair or talk over you to really listen. Even if they are listening, they’re only doing so so that they want to figure out how to respond to you in a condescending or superior way. When he leans in for that kiss, it’s because you’ve actually made a real connection and he wants to act on it.
  7. He’s intense. It’s giving broody, intense, life-is-short vibes when a guy kisses you on a first date. All the cards are on the table, and it makes the next date ideas really interesting because you’re in charge of the next move. He’s committed and doesn’t do things by halves, and isn’t that just so exciting?
  8. He seizes the moment. I want to be in a relationship with someone who pushes me and encourages me to be the best version of myself. When you’re spontaneously kissing on the first day, you’re opening yourself to new challenges. When a guy does that, he’s offering you a glimpse into your future dates. The possibilities are endless and you don’t have to play by the ‘rules’ of dating and wait until the passion has died out to have your first kiss.
  9. He’s confident. Let’s just say this: a guy with low self-esteem isn’t kissing anyone on the first date. That means that when you do get kissed on the first date, you’re seeing a confident and experienced guy. They’re always the best.
  10. He’s not afraid to be bold. We all want to make our mark on this world, and if he kisses you on the first date, it shows that he wants to make an impact. He isn’t here to waste his time or pussyfoot around the issue. If you’re both attracted to each other, why overcomplicate it?
  11. He’s probably experienced. I’m not saying that he’s necessarily a player — he could just be swept up in the moment — but when a guy kisses you on a first date, it does make you think that he’s been here before. Not necessarily in a bad way because it’s always exciting to be with someone experienced, but it’s a point to raise when you debrief with your girls the next day.
  12. He might just want you for your body. While there are lots of legitimate, wholesome reasons why a guy kisses you on the first date, also be mindful that he might just be on the date expecting to put a used condom packet in the bin at the end of it. It’s harsh but true.
  13. He could be falling for you already. On the other end of the spectrum, if a guy goes hell for leather on day one, it might mean he’s already falling for you. He knew he was attracted to you when he asked you out, but now you’ve had time together, that’s enough for him to know. Make sure you know what you want, though — you might have met a great guy, but if you’re not ready, don’t lean into the kiss!
  14. He wants to make sure he gets a second date. Kissing on the first date can also be a strategy to get a second date — a bit like a cliffhanger at the end of season one as a last-ditch attempt to get another season commissioned. It works sometimes and doesn’t others, but still worth a punt, according to his mates. Take care to not get too caught up in the whirlwind.
