Wearing a face mask in public places while coronavirus is still rife isn’t just common courtesy to protect yourself and others, in some places, it’s law. However, that hasn’t stopped many entitled jerks from refusing to do so, claiming that being ordered to stop the spread of illness is an infringement on their rights. The latest example is “Costco Karen,” a woman who literally threw herself on the floor of her local store when they refused to serve her for not wearing a mask.
- The incident took place in Hillsboro, Oregon. Costco Karen did indeed have a mask, she just wasn’t wearing it. Instead, it was hanging from one ear. When staff confronted her, asking her to please wear the face covering properly, that’s when all hell broke loose.
- She claimed it was against her constitutional rights. Despite admitting that she didn’t have a condition that would make wearing a mask dangerous or extremely uncomfortable, Costco Karen still refused to put her mask on. “You just have to tell me that you have one [medical condition]. Well then, you have to wear it. You have to wear your mask in public. This is private property,” the staff members told her. The customer then claimed that she’s not a member of Costco and wants to terminate her membership.
- The staff members asked Costco Karen to leave after she repeatedly refused to wear the mask. The customer asked to speak to a manager but was informed that the manager would only tell her the same thing: she had to wear it if she wanted to shop. “He’s gonna require the same. If you want to step outside here I’ll have him come meet you outside. You need to do that it’s our policy. We’re going to walk outside,” the staff member said.
- She refused to leave the store. Instead, she decided to act like an infant and throw a fit, plonking herself down on the floor in protest. Despite the employee trying to remain civil, offering the customer a chair outside, the customer picked herself up and plopped back down again not far away, saying, “I’m not leaving. Do you want to carry me? I am an American. I have constitutional rights!”
- It’s unclear how the situation was resolved. The camera cut off not long after Costco Karen’s rant. Hopefully security came and physically removed her and she’s banned from the store forever. Grow up, lady.
